Westlake cancer survivor shows what’s possible with 14,000-foot climb. Originally published on the Acorn April 15, 2021. Inspiration comes in many forms, and people who are faced with a life-threatening illness often see the world through a different lens. Given not one, but two cancer diagnoses in the past four years, Westlake Village resident Sarah Reines became inspired to regain her health, push her body to the limit, and climb a tall mountain. Reines, a resident of Westlake’s First Neighborhood for the past 20 years, received a lymphoma diagnosis in 2017 and a breast cancer diagnosis in 2019. She has treated both illnesses and today says she is “doing well.”

What a wild roller coaster ride 2020 has been for the Climb Against the Odds. We started out like gangbusters, filling the team in record time and even expanding from the normal team size to accommodate all that were eager to join us. Everyone jumped into fundraising and training with enthusiasm and the BCPP team worked to organize the logistics for our long weekend in Mt. Shasta.

In a shocking statement, the EPA announced they would not be penalizing companies for violating air, water and hazardous-waste-reporting and monitoring requirements, a get-out-of-jail- free card for industry abuse. This policy, which came at the request of the oil and gas/petrochemical industry, will remain in effect for an unspecified time period. Relaxing controls on air and water pollution could not come at a worse time.

On January 8, I joined 24 women in Sacramento to ask members of the California Assembly to support the California Toxic Free Cosmetic’s Act (AB 495). This bill would ban 13 of the most toxic chemicals currently being used in cosmetics in America; all of these chemicals are banned in the EU.
