This study used advanced computer modeling to assess the combined reproductive health risks of phthalates (PAEs) and organophosphates (OPEs) found in atmospheric particles, focusing on their ability to disrupt hormone receptors. The researchers found that the mixed toxicity of these compounds was lower than expected from individual effects, suggesting they may interfere with each other’s toxic actions through antagonistic effects. Using network analysis and molecular modeling, they identified 590 potential targets and 50 core targets (including hormone receptors) affected by these pollutants, with DEHP, TPHP, and MEHP being key disruptors of hormone signaling pathways. The study also identified two previously overlooked targets (AKT1 and HSP90AA1) that may be important for reproductive toxicity, providing new insights into how these atmospheric pollutants may affect human reproductive health.

A nationwide US study analyzing drinking water contamination and cancer incidence (2016-2021) found that PFAS (“forever chemicals”) in public water systems were associated with increased rates of multiple cancers, with incidence rate increases ranging from 2% to 33% across different cancer types. The strongest association was a 33% increased rate of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers linked to PFBS exposure, with other significant associations found for digestive, respiratory, endocrine, thyroid, urinary, brain, and soft tissue cancers, showing notable sex-based differences in cancer patterns. Researchers estimate that PFAS contamination in US drinking water may contribute to approximately 4,600-6,900 new cancer cases annually, underscoring the urgent public health need for stricter water quality standards and expanded monitoring of these persistent environmental pollutants.

This study examined the health impacts of three major plastic-associated chemicals—BPA, DEHP, and PBDEs—across 38 countries representing one-third of the global population. The researchers found that in 2015, these chemicals were linked to approximately 5.4 million cases of heart disease, 346,000 strokes, 164,000 deaths among older adults, and 11.7 million lost IQ points in children due to prenatal exposure. The total economic cost of these health impacts was estimated at $1.5 trillion. The study suggests that if exposure levels had been reduced earlier, hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of IQ points could have been prevented.

A study of 1,031 pregnant women from the socioeconomically diverse CANDLE cohort in the urban South found that ultra-processed foods constituted 38.6% of participants’ diets on average, with each 10% higher dietary proportion of ultra-processed foods associated with 13.1% higher urinary concentrations of DEHP phthalate metabolites, while specific foods like hamburgers, French fries, soda, and cake showed 6-10.5% higher DEHP per standard deviation increase in consumption. Causal mediation analyses revealed that lower income and education levels were associated with 1.9% and 1.4% higher DEHP exposure respectively, mediated through increased ultra-processed food consumption, indicating that ultra-processed foods contribute to socioeconomic disparities in phthalate exposure during pregnancy. The findings demonstrate that consuming ultra-processed foods increases exposure to endocrine-disrupting phthalates from food contact materials, and because socioeconomic barriers can prevent dietary modifications, policies to reduce phthalates in food packaging and processing are needed rather than relying solely on individual dietary recommendations to reduce prenatal phthalate exposures.

A review of epidemiologic literature examining environmental chemical exposures during pregnancy and three maternal health outcomes (preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and breast cancer) found that pregnancy represents a unique critical period when biological changes can heighten women’s susceptibility to chemicals from air, food, water, and consumer products—including flame retardants, plasticizers, pesticides, and lead—though research has disproportionately focused on fetal outcomes rather than maternal health risks, which remain poorly characterized for most chemicals. While evidence shows that lead exposure increases risk of pregnancy-induced hypertensive disorders and pregnancy can amplify women’s vulnerability to environmental chemicals, variations in study design, exposure assessment methods, and inconsistent adjustment for confounders limited comparability across studies. The authors emphasize that future research must recognize pregnancy as a critical window for women’s lifelong health, calling for incorporation of biomarkers of exposure and effect, deliberate timing and methods of measurement, and consistent confounder adjustment to strengthen understanding of the pregnancy exposome and its impacts on maternal health outcomes beyond the immediate postpartum period.

A 2022 study tested 571 cash register receipts from U.S. retailers to assess endocrine-disrupting chemicals in thermal paper and compared findings to a 2017 study. Bisphenol S (BPS) was found in 85% of receipts, Pergafast 201 in 12%, and bisphenol A (BPA) in only 1%, indicating a shift away from BPA. National retailers were more likely than local ones to use non-bisphenol alternatives. These findings highlight potential health risks from handling receipts, as BPS and other chemicals can still pose significant exposure concerns.

The following study explores the presence of endocrine disruptors such as phthalates (specifically mono-2-ethyl phthalate and mono-n-butyl phthalate), bisphenol A (BPA), and 1-hydroxypyrene in the urine samples of marginalized Indigenous populations. The study found that 100% of the women sampled showed exposure to these harmful chemicals, with higher concentrations than observed in similar studies from other communities. This increased exposure is linked to environmental and cultural factors, such as the common use of plastic containers and practices such as burning garbage. The women sampled were found to have especially high levels of mono-2-ethyl phthalate, which suggests significant exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. These findings highlight the vulnerability of indigenous communities to pollution due to a lack of awareness, limited healthcare access, and inadequate regulatory measures.

Given that human exposure to EDCs via drinking water poses significant health concerns even at trace concentrations, the ability to detect and evaluate EDC contamination with high sensitivity and accuracy is critically important for protecting public health and informing regulatory policy.

A study of 54 female cashiers in South Korea found that handling thermal paper receipts without gloves doubled their urinary BPA levels during work shifts, but wearing gloves completely prevented this increase in exposure. Higher BPA levels were associated with elevated fasting insulin and insulin resistance, markers of metabolic dysfunction that can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The findings demonstrate that cashiers face significant occupational BPA exposure from receipt handling and that simple protective measures like wearing gloves can effectively eliminate this exposure route, offering an immediate and practical intervention to protect workers’ health.

A recent study investigated the potential carcinogen 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI) in popular beverages colored with caramel, revealing potential cancer risks. Using data from California, where Proposition 65 enforces warning labels on drinks exceeding safe 4-MEI levels, researchers found that 4-MEI concentrations varied by brand and region. For example, Malta Goya had the highest 4-MEI levels, while Coca-Cola had the lowest. Regular consumption of certain sodas could result in daily 4-MEI exposure above safe limits.
